Instrument Building workshop with Ed Devane
Sunday 7th February
11am - 4pm
€30 per person
Maximum 10 places, booking is essential.
Suitable for adults and kids 14+

Participants will learn how to make a two-stringed slide hurdy-gurdy, made out of cardboard and wood. Participants will assemble the instrument from a kit: in doing so they will learn how to calculate, measure and mark fret / note positions, and how to assemble the instrument using cotton wool, rosin, wood glue, hot glue, sandpaper, pipe cutters, gum tape and various other joining and finishing materials and techniques. Participants will also come away with a general understanding about music and the craft of instrument design.

No previous musical or craft experience is required. At the end of the workshop participants will leave with an instrument at once rooted in its medieval origins and in the contemporary world of digital fabrication used in its design and realisation.

Ed Devane is an experimental musician, instrument designer and workshop facilitator based in Donegal.
