School Days: Cobh & Great Island
Many people say their days at school were their best, citing fond memories of camaraderie, learning, sport and play. Others had a tougher time of it for one reason or another and so they are glad to see their school days come to an end. School memories are often recounted in conversation but rarely recorded. It is often a contemporary situation that triggers recall in a school veteran. The children of today sometimes need reminding of how good they have it!
It is now commonplace to document school occasions and events with photography but in the early days of the medium a group photograph at school was most likely the only visual record, if any, of a child’s time at school. Individual portraits and snapshots only became affordable much later on following advances in photographic technology.
Sirius Arts Centre are currently looking for old school photographs relating to people’s school days in Cobh and Great Island. The photographs and any associated information will form part of an archive and exhibition on display at Sirius Arts Centre from May until July 2019. The exhibition will open on 2nd of May in conjunction with This Must Be The Place | The Great Island (2nd-12th May) and See You Tomorrow, a project and exhibition by Elizabeth Woods and Kevin Leong.
Did you go to a school in Cobh or elsewhere on Great Island? Do you have any class photos, individual portraits, sports day photos, snapshots from the school play or something more unusual? Perhaps you have school photos featuring your parents, grandparents or great grandparents or any other relatives? Did you go to school in the former yacht club, currently Sirius Arts Centre?
This call-out is mainly aimed at those who are no longer at school and in possession of treasured old photographs from bygone eras. This can be anytime from the mid 19th Century right up to the 1990s. Current and more recent school goers will be contacted separately, via their schools, in order to bring things up to date.
If you have some photographs and stories you would like to share please contact Brian Mac Domhnaill at Sirius Arts Centre by emailing email@example.com or call us on 021 4813790 with your contact details. Brian will be in touch to arrange scanning your photographs and taking note of any associated information and stories.
