Lorraine Neeson works primarily with lens based media, light, sound, video installation and architectural intervention, to create multi-sensory environments that disrupt and disorient a conventional sense of spatial and temporal logic.

The combined series of works presented in Current in the West Gallery of Sirius Arts Centre, explore the notion of rupture and repeated interruption within the viewing experience.  A fundamental device is the simultaneous representation of conflicting states of revelation and obliteration.  In the half-light environment, reduced visibility causes dark surfaces to fluctuate as both optically reflective and absorbent.  The architectural features and shifting light within the room appear and disappear as the viewer navigates the space. The provisional alignment of the present moment - the here and now, becomes dislodged, delayed or repeated.

Carefully chosen materials such as black glass in a yew frame operate as signifiers to other worlds – the yew tree commonly found growing in Irish graveyards and the black glass as a medium for ‘scrying’ – a practice of peering into a suitable medium in the hope of detecting a message or vision. Dislocating devices and strategies including time loops, repetition and interferences in transmission, all contribute to an environment of instability and shifting awareness, pointing to spaces and realms outside the immediately visible or understood.  Lorraine Neeson lives in Killarney, Co. Kerry.  She works from her studio at Backwater Artists’ Studios in Cork and lectures in Fine Art Lens Based Media at Limerick School of Art and Design.
